The world’s most punctual airline for the month of June has been revealed, with Australia’s national carrier coming out on top.Qantas has beaten 25 other major global airlines for the title of the most on-time carrier, according to digital flight information provider OAG.A ‘major airline’ is considered as having more than 20,000 monthly flights. The company recorded Qantas as having the best on-time performance” of 87.1 per cent, ahead of Avianca (Colombia) at 87 per cent and IndiGo (India) with 86.6 per cent.Garuda Indonesia recorded a higher on-time performance score of 97 per cent, but it flew about one third the number of flights as Qantas in June and is not placed in the ‘major airlines’ category. It is the best June result for the airline since 2017, with almost 85 per cent of all Qantas domestic flights departing on time. The carrier’s international network also performed strongly, with 74 per cent of flights departing on time and more than 87 per cent arriving within 30 minutes of schedule. Qantas added that they achieved their best on-time performance across their domestic and regional network since 2019, up 3.4 percentage points year on year. “We know how much our customers value getting to their destination safely and on time,” Qantas Domestic CEO, Markus Svensson, said in a statement.“Across our teams, there has been a huge amount of work to improve our reliability. “These results reflect the hard work of thousands of people across our operation who show up every day to keep our customers moving. “While we know there’s always more to do and not every customer journey is seamless, improving reliability remains a key focus for us. “We’re continuing to invest in initiatives that help more of our customers get away on time and deliver a better experience every time they fly with us.”An “on-time” flight is defined as one that departs or arrives within 15 minutes of its scheduled time.Across 145 airlines, Qantas sits in the 23rd spot according to OAG and has a cancellation rate of 1.59 per cent.Virgin Australia secured 71st spot with 80.1 per cent of flights recorded on time, however just 0.96 per cent of Virgin’s flights in June were cancelled.Jetstar claimed 90th position with 75.8 per cent flights on time, and a cancellation rate of 0.77 per cent for the month.Meanwhile, in the ‘large airlines’ category (between 10,000 and 20,000 flights), Virgin and Jetstar ranked 18th and 24th, respectively - out of 35 airlines. Qantas have put much of the win down to welcoming new aircraft to their fleet, along with more efficient boarding techniques. The Flying Kangaroo now has 12 Airbus A220-300s with another three on the way, with Qantas’ 220 fleet to double to 29 by the end of 2027.This new aircraft type joined Qantas in 2023 and consistently rates highly with passengers for its quiet cabin and larger windows. It also is a win economically, burning around 25 per cent less fuel than the aircraft it replaced, the Boeing 717 fleet. Qantas also boasts seven of the larger Airbus A321XLR, with another 41 on the way.The aircraft is progressively replacing the Boeing 737 on the longest domestic flight between Brisbane and Perth.Read related topics:Qantas
