The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has stated that many of the black spots persisted because some residents and businesses deliberately bypass approved waste collection channels in an attempt to evade payment for waste management services.

He said that LAWMA has intensified efforts to restore environmental sanity across Lagos, carrying out a major clean-up intervention at several black spots in the Apapa axis as part of ongoing measures to improve waste evacuation and environmental sustainability across the state.

In a statement on Friday, Gbadegesin said during the exercise, which spanned Marine Beach, Warehouse Road, Randle Road, Mobile Road and other identified black spots, that LAWMA remained committed to eliminating indiscriminate waste disposal across the city, warning that violators would be sanctioned in line with existing environmental laws.

“Many of the people generating waste in these locations are not captured within the formal PSP system. As a result, despite repeated evacuation exercises by LAWMA and PSP operators, the waste keeps reappearing. We cannot continue to expend public resources in clearing the same locations while some individuals persist in illegal waste disposal practices,” Gbadegesin said.
