Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour is appearing on media this morning following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s whirlwind visit over the weekend.The Act Party leader’s appearance also follows China’s missile test in the South Pacific last Monday, which has raised deep concerns in both Australia and New Zealand.Seymour - who is filling in as Acting Prime Minister while Christopher Luxon is on holiday - will appear in studio on Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking Breakfast at 7.37am. You can listen here.Modi’s visit - the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 40 years - marked the signing of the free trade agreement between India and New Zealand.Luxon hailed the trip as a turning point in ties between the two nations, greeting his Indian counterpart with a hug when Modi touched down on Friday evening ahead of a formal bilateral meeting the following morning.Extensive security arrangements were in place throughout the trip, with protesters from anti-immigration groups and a Sikh separatist movement targeting a thousands-strong event held by the Indian community.Modi’s visit came amid Government infighting over the free trade deal with India, with Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters claiming National ministers had covertly tightened immigration settings for Indians.Peters last week also expressed concerns over China’s testing of a nuclear-capable missile in the South Pacific, calling it an “unwelcome and concerning development”.China had warned New Zealand and Australia of its plans just hours before launching the long-range ballistic missile from a navy submarine into international waters. The missile, which carried an inert dummy warhead, is believed to have splashed down near Tuvalu.The Chinese Government called the test “routine” but commentators have linked it to a new defence pact signed earlier that day between Australia and Fiji.
