Veteran Republican praised for steadfast support for Ukraine and NATO
EU and NATO leaders paid tribute on Sunday to US Senator Lindsey Graham after his sudden death, praising the veteran Republican’s steadfast support for Ukraine and the transatlantic alliance.
Graham, a close ally of President Donald Trump, died on Saturday at the age of 71 following a “brief and sudden illness”, his office said.
An influential voice on US foreign policy, he championed military aid to Kyiv, pushed for tougher sanctions on Moscow after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and strongly backed the recent US military strikes against Iran.
“Senator Graham fought until the very end to support Ukraine’s fight for freedom and raise the cost of Russia’s war of aggression. He worked tirelessly to strengthen sanctions, in close coordination with the EU,” von der Leyen posted online.
