The Australian Army tested the Vector AI reconnaissance drone during the Southern Jackaroo exercises at the Townsville training area in Queensland, utilizing a system refined through combat deployment in Ukraine. This software reduces the manual workload required for operators to review video feeds. The Vector AI is an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) drone with a 2.8-meter wingspan. It takes off without a runway and transitions to fixed-wing horizontal flight to cover longer distances. Corporal Harrison Hinson of the Australian Army’s 2nd Cavalry Regiment stated the drone mitigates risks for military personnel by reducing the need for forward physical reconnaissance on foot or in vehicles. He noted the system functions as an additional tool for intelligence and strike capabilities rather than a complete replacement for traditional reconnaissance methods.
