The European Commission has officially recommended suspending grant funding for the Venice Biennale following the opening of the Russian Pavilion there.
According to Ukrinform, this was announced by Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy of the European Commission, Henna Virkkunen, on the social media platform X.
“The Commission officially recommends EACEA [the European Education and Culture Executive Agency] to terminate the €2 million grant to the Venice Biennale,” the post reads.
According to Virkkunen, this recommendation was adopted following a thorough analysis of the Venice Biennale’s explanations regarding its decision to open the Russian Pavilion.
As reported by Ukrinform, in April, the European Commission warned in a letter to the president of the Venice Biennale that it might freeze a 2 million-euro grant in response to the opening of the Russian Pavilion.
