One supermarket is now the most expensive in our eight-item price comparison for the first time in 12 months11:56, 12 Jul 2026A supermarket has topped the most expensive list for the first time in a year after Aldi slashed the price of a key staple by 11%. Since last summer, Sainsbury's has largely occupied the unwanted position in our weekly price comparison, which monitors the cost of the same eight basic items across the six major supermarkets.‌Until recently, Tesco had held the title of the priciest for the basket of groceries — which includes bread, butter, beans, milk, tea bags, coffee, chicken and beef mince — for five consecutive weeks. However, with Aldi cutting the price of its tea bags from £1.85 to £1.65 this week — and Sainsbury's and Tesco following suit with the same price match reduction — Morrisons, with a total bill of £13.53, has become the most expensive supermarket for the first time since last June, reports the Manchester Evening News.‌‌Aldi's price reduction has also propelled it to the top spot as the cheapest retailer in our comparison, unseating Lidl for the first time since early December. The cut has brought Aldi's total down to £13.13, with Lidl now at £13.31 and Asda close behind at £13.34.Sainsbury's sits fourth cheapest, with its bill falling from £13.57 to £13.37, followed by Tesco, which has also reduced the price of its chicken breasts, bringing its total down from £13.75 to £13.50. Not every retailer is in agreement with our conclusions.‌Aldi has consistently maintained that the products aren't like-for-like, claiming its own Diplomat Red Label tea bags and coffee are of 'higher quality' than the comparable products used, and that its tins of beans are heavier than those of some rival supermarkets. An Aldi spokesperson told the MEN: "Our customers know they can always count on us for great value across the board, without needing to join a club or show a loyalty card. That's why Which? has named us Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for five years running."Sainsbury's also says the 'review of a limited number of products does not reflect the fantastic value' customers will find in store and says it's 'committed to offering customers great choice and value when they shop with us'.‌A spokesperson for Asda said: "Asda is delivering unbeatable value on the products families buy most, from everyday essentials to the big brands they know and love."With thousands of products already cheaper than Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's, including their loyalty card prices, independent surveys consistently recognise Asda as the best-value full-range supermarket, with low prices available to all."Morrisons says it 'remains committed to providing good, honest value' and is 'working hard to keep prices down and competitive so customers can spend less while still enjoying the quality Morrisons is famous for'.‌A spokesperson said: "This weekend for example (July 10-12), Morrisons has a brought back the British Barbecue Meat Pack featuring 20 pieces of 100% British meat for just £5.97, saving customers over £3. Perfect for get-togethers, the 100% British meat pack has eight juicy beef burgers and 12 pork sausages - all fresh from the Morrisons Butcher Counter."In addition, our More Card members can earn five More Points on every product in store, online and in Morrisons Daily stores and also benefit from personalised offers and money-off coupons on the things they buy the most of. Customers to our cafes can also take advantage of a range of offers such as our Kids Eat Free promotion, which runs every day, or free refills on all hot drinks."‌Here are this week's resultsAldiLoaf of bread 800g - 55pMilk 2 pints - £1.20Coffee 200g - £2.09Teabags 160 - £1.65 (down from £1.85)Salted butter 250g - £1.99Beans 420g tin - 27pChicken 300g - £2.29Mince 500g 25% fat - £3.09Total: £13.13 (down from £13.33)LidlLoaf of white bread 800g - 55pMilk 2 pints - £1.20Coffee 200g - £2.09Tea bags 240 pack - £2.75 / equates to £1.83 for 160Salted butter 250g - £1.99Beans 420g tin - 27p (down from 28p)Chicken 300g - £2.29Mince 500g 25% fat - £3.09‌Total: £13.31 (down from £13.32)AsdaLoaf of white bread 800g - 55pMilk 2 pints - £1.20Coffee 200g (2 x 100g) - £2.30Teabags 160 (4 x 40-pack) - £1.60Salted butter 250g - £1.98Beans 410g tin - 28pChicken 300g - £2.50 for 320g, equates to £2.34 for 300gMince 500g 20% fat - £3.09Total £13.34‌SainsburysLoaf of bread 800g - 55pMilk 2 pints - £1.20Coffee 200g - £2.30Teabags 160 - £1.65 (down from £1.85)Salted butter 250g - £1.99Beans 400g tin - 30pChicken 300g - £2.44 for 320g, equates to £2.29 for 300gMince 500g 25% fat - £3.09Total: £13.37 (down from £13.57)TescoLoaf of white bread 800g - 55pMilk 2 pints - £1.20Coffee 200g (2 x 100g) - £2.30Teabags 160 (2 x 80-pack) - £1.64 (down from £1.84)Salted butter 250g - £1.99Beans 420g tin - 28pChicken 300g - £2.44 for 320g, equates to £2.29 for 300g (down from £2.34)Mince 500g 20% fat - £3.25Article continues belowTotal £13.50 (down from £13.75)MorrisonsLoaf of white bread 800g - 55pMilk 2 pints - £1.20Coffee (2 x 100g) - £2.30Teabags 160 (2 x 80-pack Savers) - £1.84Salted butter 250g - £1.99Beans 27pChicken 300g - £2.52 for 330g, equates to £2.29 for 300gMince 500g 25% fat - £3.09Total: £13.53
