LAS VEGAS — Before UFC 329, it seemed as if the final image of Conor McGregor in a UFC octagon would be of him in befuddled pain after he broke his left leg in 2021. After Saturday night, the enduring image will be something seemingly more painful — a first-minute loss after a leg injury that appeared to be accidental.McGregor slipped twice in the opening 40 seconds and limped heavily in between. After the bout, McGregor left the cage before Max Holloway’s hand was even raised, and boos rained down from the confused T-Mobile Arena crowd. It was not clear if McGregor sustained an injury before the fight, but he opened the bout with two sloppy, jumping kicks that ended with awkward landings.Although the exact injury was not clear, the UFC commentator Joe Rogan said he believed McGregor “blew out” his right knee. UFC CEO Dana White was expected to meet with reporters later Saturday night, and McGregor exited the arena floor without speaking. He returned Saturday attempting to reorient the final chapter of his career, to bring some attention back to his in-ring spectacles after years of outside-the-cage troubles.Instead, the Las Vegas crowd was left fleeing for the doors at the time they usually would be cheering their returning star. No knockout, no win. Not even a proper exchange or takedown. Just Holloway looking on and pointing out that McGregor was in no position to continue.
