Two people have been killed in a shooting at a street festival in Toronto, Canada.Toronto police had initially announced reports of an active shooter on St Clair Avenue, where the annual Salsa on St. Clair festival was being held, just after 8pm on Saturday, local time.However, a late-night update confirmed police were not hunting an active shooter in relation to violent gunfire at the festival.Five people were found with gunshot wounds and two people were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the police.Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo quelled the earlier fears of an active shooter at a news conference.“This seemed to be an exchange of gunfire between two individuals targeting each other,” Barredo said.“There was some concern about an active shooter. That turned out not to be the case,” he added.Two firearms were recovered from the scene but no suspects had been identified and no arrests had been made, the deputy chief confirmed.The Salsa on St. Clair festival, held between July 11-12, is Canada’s largest Latin street festival, celebrating culture, food and music. In a statement on X, Ontario Premier Doug Ford had said he was “devastated by the senseless violence”.“The person responsible must be caught, brought to justice and spend the rest of their life behind bars,” he wrote. “My thoughts are with the victims, their families and everyone affected.
