The National Education Policy 2020 is a first serious attempt to decolonise our education system, said Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the 59th convocation ceremony of Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College on Saturday in Chennai.Addressing the gathering he said, “All these years we have been following the colonised education system. If the decolonised education system or the NEP 2020 is implemented, all the students will be able to answer what am I here to have as education.”Pointing out that the purpose of an education is to build character he said the purpose of the NEP 2020 is to create a good person.Stating that the NEP 2020 is being implemented vigorously he added that there may be some differences in NEP 2020. “If there is something incorrect, we all are free to stand up and tell it to be rectified. But not implementing the policy at all, I don’t understand the reason behind this. Not implementing the policy shows that we are not ready to have any changes,” he said.A total of 3,224 students received their degrees, which includes 574 postgraduate students and 2,650 undergraduate students. As many as 146 rank holders received their degrees at the ceremony. Further, 12 students with disabilities also received their degrees.Principal S. Santhosh Baboo said that during the previous academic year, the college successfully aligned its academic, co-curricular, extracurricular, and extension activities with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), resulting in the successful implementation of several impactful programmes that contributed to sustainable development and social responsibility.Secretary of the college Ashok Kumar Mundhra and other faculty members of the institution were present at the event.
