The Scandinavians were the better side for long stretches and repeatedly troubled England’s defense. Their deserved advantage was reflected on the scoreboard in the 35th minute, when Martin Odegaard found Andreas Schjelderup near the corner of the penalty area. The young midfielder unleashed a powerful shot that struck the post and went into Jordan Pickford’s net.Andreas Schjelderup scores against England (Photo: AP Photo/Chris Carlson)But England did not collapse, and it had Jude Bellingham. In first-half stoppage time, Anthony Gordon found the Real Madrid midfielder inside the penalty area. Bellingham glided past the Norwegian defense and fired an accurate shot into the corner to make it 1-1 at a crucial moment.Norway continued to trouble England in the air in the second half and nearly regained the lead. Another set piece found Kristoffer Ajer, whose powerful header struck the crossbar. Pickford was already beaten, but the woodwork saved England from conceding again and the match went to extra time. The drama reached its peak at the start of extra time, in the 94th minute. Substitute Morgan Rogers unleashed a powerful shot from outside the penalty area, Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland parried it poorly into the center of the box and Bellingham burst forward to turn in the rebound from close range, making it 2-1 and completing a brilliant brace.Bellingham is enjoying a phenomenal tournament. The midfielder scored twice for the second consecutive match, taking his tally to three goals in the knockout rounds and six overall. He is the only midfielder near the top of the scoring chart at the 2026 World Cup.Jude Bellingham scores against Norway (Photo: Buda Mendes / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / AFP)Harry Kane, by contrast, was far from impressive. The Bayern Munich striker endured a poor night, managing only two shots on target, neither of which seriously troubled Nyland. For Norway, it was a painful end to a historic tournament in which it eliminated Brazil in the round of 16. To get past England, the Scandinavians needed their two biggest stars at their best, but Erling Haaland and Odegaard failed to deliver.Haaland looked isolated and ineffective, producing only one shot on target. In a highly unusual decision, he was substituted before the second period of extra time. He ends an outstanding World Cup debut with seven goals, but this time it was not enough.England players celebrate (Photo: Reuters/Sam Navarro)England, which eliminated Mexico with a dramatic 3-2 victory in the round of 16, again showed tremendous character and moves on to the next stage. The question now is whether the generation led by Bellingham and his teammates will finally be the one to bring the trophy home.
