Poland is ready to help Ukraine modernize its MiG-29 fighter jets, but the costs of the upgrades should be covered by Ukraine or its allied partners.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz made the statement on Saturday after memorial events in the Ukrainian town of Olyka marking the 83rd anniversary of the Volhynia tragedy, Ukrinform reports, citing Defence24.pl.

Commenting on the prospect of transferring Polish MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in exchange for access to Ukrainian drone production technologies, Kosiniak-Kamysz said there was "certainly much more good news in this matter than there was a few days ago."

"Ukraine already has significant drone production capabilities and sells them to the Middle East. That means not all of them are being used in the war, and Ukraine can share them with those who offer it their help," the Polish Defense Minister said.

He recalled that Ukraine had initially responded positively to the proposal to exchange MiG-29s for drone technologies, but the negotiations were later suspended.
