On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Rays selected shortstop Grady Emerson out of Fort Worth Christian School in North Richland Hills, Texas, with the second pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. He is the first high school player selected in this year’s draft.Despite eventual No. 1 pick Roch Cholowsky being the projected as the top MLB Draft prospect for the majority of this draft year, Emerson began to emerge as a strong candidate to go No. 1 as the summer approached. Ultimately, he went second and will join an organization well known for their strong player development system.Emerson impressed evaluators throughout his time on the high school showcase circuit, and culminated his prep career with a .532/. 648/ 1.013 line with seven home runs, 50 RBI and 31 stolen bases. He was only the second high schooler in 48 years to be nominated for the Golden Spikes award, the other being Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who Emerson has trained with in the past and considers a mentor.
Emerson is widely regarded as the best pure hitter in the 2026 class, pairing an advanced approach with one of the strongest offensive track records in the prep ranks.Emerson became the first player to appear on multiple USA Baseball U-15 and U-18 national teams. A left-handed hitter, Emerson combines elite barrel control, strike-zone discipline and all-fields contact with emerging power. His mature approach and bat-to-ball skills give him one of the highest offensive floors in the class, while his strength and physical projection point to at least average future power.“(T)he descriptions I hear from scouts and execs make it sound like they’re hoping he’s the next Kevin McGonigle,” wrote The Athletic’s lead draft analyst Keith Law. “And maybe he is: Emerson does hit, making contact at a reasonably high clip last summer at showcases (13.3 percent strikeout rate, 23.3 percent whiff rate), while showing fringe-average power now that projects to above-average at his peak.”Defensively, Emerson has the tools to remain at shortstop, where he pairs reliable actions, soft hands and a plus arm with strong instincts. He is an above-average runner who should continue to provide value on both sides of the ball, giving him one of the most complete profiles of any player in this class. His power was on display in last year’s high school home run derby at Truist Park as part off MLB All-Star weekend, where he was the runner-up in the final round. He grew up a Texas Rangers fan, and mirrored his game after second baseball Ian Kinsler.Jul 11, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
