Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, speaking during memorial events in the Ukrainian town of Olyka marking the 83rd anniversary of the Volhynia tragedy, stressed the need to carry out exhumations of victims and build Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation based on truth, remembrance, and forgiveness.
The ceremony was also attended by Ukrainian officials, including First Deputy Minister of Culture of Ukraine Ivan Verbytskyi and Head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory Oleksandr Alfyorov, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.
Kosiniak-Kamysz said that those gathered in Olyka came together to remember the victims of the tragedy and to do everything possible to ensure that such events never happen again in relations between the Polish and Ukrainian peoples.
"What does a good future require? It requires truth, it requires honoring memory, and it offers forgiveness. These three values are inseparably connected," the Polish Deputy Prime Minister said.
He emphasized that he came to Volyn "with a sign of peace, as a friend," saying that there must be room for sincere dialogue between the two nations, even on difficult historical issues.
