Emmanuel Wanyonyi curved his name into the record books with a stunning run that erased a 27 year mark.
The reigning Olympic and world 800m champion shaved 0.13 seconds off Noah Ngeny’s long standing 1000m world record of 2:11.96, set in Rieti in 1999, producing a new record in Monaco.
Wanyonyi executed the plan with utter precision, tracking the pacemakers through the early stages and positioning himself perfectly as the race started. The spectators witnessed the first lap in a blistering 50.95, and when the final pacer pulled off after 800m, which the leaders passed in 1:45.11, Wanyonyi unleashed a powerful energy.
