The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has expanded the country's banknote series with the introduction of a UAH 2,000 denomination.
NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyy announced this at a briefing in Kyiv, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.
The new banknote features Ukrainian poet and dissident Vasyl Stus on the front and will enter circulation on September 4, 2026.
The central bank said the date was chosen to commemorate both Stus's public protest against Soviet repression in 1965 and the day of his death in prison in 1985.
According to Pyshnyy, the decision to introduce the new denomination reflects changes in the economy. Since the UAH 1,000 banknote was introduced in 2019, the average wage in Ukraine has nearly tripled, consumer prices have doubled, and UAH 1,000 notes now account for more than 55% of the total value of banknotes in circulation.
