A trough off the north Tamil Nadu coast brought increased cloud cover and relief from soaring temperatures in places like Chennai on Friday. Similar weather condition may persist on Saturday before dry weather returns to most parts of Tamil Nadu and remains till July 16.After a spell of hot weather, some places, particularly over north coastal Tamil Nadu, experienced cloudy weather on Friday. During the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Friday, Coonoor in Nilgiris district recorded 6 cm rain followed by Ambattur in Chennai and Echanviduthi in Thanjavur district with 5 cm each. Many other places, particularly in Tiruvallur, Coimbatore, and Chennai districts, recorded rainfall with light to moderate intensity.Places like Chennai, Thondi in Ramanathapuram, Tiruttani, Tirupattur, and Vellore, which were experiencing hot weather, recorded below average or average maximum temperatures on Friday. While Chennai’s Nungambakkam recorded 34.3 degrees Celsius, Vellore registered 35.4 degrees Celsius. However, temperatures levels soared in interior places like Madurai and Tiruchi.Officials of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said low-level wind convergence that persisted over north coastal Tamil Nadu helped control maximum temperature over Chennai and adjoining areas.V.R. Durai, Head, Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, RMC, said there is a possibility of light rain over one or two places in south Tamil Nadu, coastal region and Puducherry, Karaikal area on Saturday. However, with the trough expected to shift position, temperatures may rise.With Southwest monsoon in its weak phase in Tamil Nadu, dry weather may return to most parts of the State from Sunday and last till July 16. Districts along the Western Ghats may continue to experience a wet spell. There are chances for light rainfall over parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu on July 16.The RMC has predicted that day temperature might rise two to three degrees Celsius above normal in one or two places over Tamil Nadu and stay near normal in other parts from Sunday.
