Inglewood, US, Jul 10 (EFE).- Spain advanced to the World Cup semifinals as Mikel Merino came off the bench to rescue the Spanish national team with an 88th-minute goal against Belgium (2-1).

In the first half, Spain dominated possession and took two shots saved by Nathan Ngoy, while Doku and Lamine Yamal tried to pick up the pace.

Near the 30th minute, Yamal threaded a pass to Pedro Porro, who cut the ball back to Dani Olmo. Thibaut Courtois managed an initial save, but the ensuing play resulted in a goal by Fabian Ruiz Peña.

However, a cross from Timothy Castagne on the right wing was finished by Charles De Ketelaere, the first player to score against Spain in this World Cup.

In the 71st minute, Thibaut Courtois had to leave the field due to discomfort in his left thigh. He was replaced by debutant Senne Lammens, who played a key role in the goal that eliminated Belgium and sent Spain through.
