Communications-services companies ticked up as traders rotated into risky sectors.

Shares of British carrier Vodafone surged after French billionaire Xavier Niel agreed to buy a 16.2% stake in the U.K. telecommunications company, becoming its largest shareholder.

Netflix fell after The Wall Street Journal reported that executives had discussed adding live TV channels and streaming bundles to the streaming platform in a bid to boost engagement. Shares of the streaming firm are down by more than 40% from their recent peak as traders back off bets that the company would dominate the post-cable video-content era.
