July 10 (UPI) -- Michigan hired assistant Mike Boynton Jr. to replace Dusty May as men's basketball coach, athletic director Warde Manuel announced Friday.

Boynton was named interim coach when May was hired last month to coach the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. He joined the Wolverines staff in 2024.

"I'm grateful to Warde for his confidence and thankful for the opportunity to lead this program," Boynton said. "We have built a championship culture and a standard that everyone associated with this program takes great pride in.

"We have an outstanding group of players, and I'm excited to get to work and continue the success we've established together."

Boynton coached Oklahoma State from 2017 to 2024. He also worked as an assistant at Coastal Carolina, Wofford, South Carolina and Stephen F. Austin.
