A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe, police said in a statement on Friday.
Devon and Cornwall Police said they had detained a white British male after the 78-year-old former Conservative politician was found dead at her home with serious injuries on Thursday.
Police said the incident was not being treated as terrorism and there was “no information” to suggest a political motivation.
Police said earlier on Friday that a murder investigation had been launched into Widdecombe's death after it emerged she had “sustained serious injuries” when she was found on Thursday in Haytor, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the circumstances of her death “are extremely distressing.”
