President Donald Trump announced that negotiations with Iran have restarted, but reiterated his stance that the memorandum of understanding that paused hostilities between the nations is still “over.”“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue ‘talks.’ We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the Cease Fire is OVER!” Trump wrote on Truth Social Friday morning.
The president first announced the end of the MOU while attending the annual NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, earlier this week, in retaliation for Iran attacking commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday and Tuesday. The MOU’s terms included a 60-day period for the U.S. and Tehran to negotiate a peace deal ending the war. But Trump’s surprise announcement that the MOU was over upended future negotiations to end the conflict.
ISRAEL STAYS OUT OF US STRIKES ON IRAN — FOR NOW“They’re scum,” Trump said while in Ankara. “They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people. They’re vicious, violent people, and if they had a nuclear weapon, they’d use it.”The U.S. struck targets along Iran’s coastline for two consecutive days this week to dampen its control of the Strait of Hormuz. While at NATO, Trump claimed the U.S. had also struck Iran’s Kharg Island and threatened to take it over.
