Proteas cricketers are there on merit, but transformation targets remain important, says former national bowling coach, Vincent Barnes, on Crossing the Line podcast with Ryland Fisher.

Former Proteas bowling coach, Vincent Barnes, believes that a lot of work is being done within Cricket South Africa to create opportunities for players who might not have had opportunities in the past.

“Although they won’t admit it, there are obviously still transformation targets, and for good reason. But I also feel the players coming through the system, the guys getting into the provincial and national sides, are there on merit,” he told media veteran Ryland Fisher on the Crossing the Line podcast. IOL has a partnership with the podcast in which we promote their weekly episodes.

In a wide-ranging interview, Barnes spoke about how he had to choose between playing cricket or football professionally when he was in his prime, how he made his provincial debuts as a 16-year-old in both cricket and football, how he managed some of the best bowlers in South African cricket history, and the work he is doing as the head of the SA20 schools programme.

“I will never forget when Gerald Majola, then CEO of Cricket SA, told me after I was appointed as assistant coach of the Proteas, that I was going into an environment where there was no place to hide.
