Cabinets and cupboards have a funny way of devolving into a cluttered mess, whether they’re used for dry storage ingredients, pots and pans or just a designated space for all your household overflow. Rather than continuing on with the struggle of finding just what you need, when you need it, I asked two professional organizers the top items they use when approaching the task of cabinet organizing. Jennifer Granger Tipton, a member of the National Association of Productivity & Organizing Professionals (NAPO) Board of Directors and the owner of Breathable Spaces in Ohio, said that the first step to cabinet organizing is to always remove everything from the cabinet because it’s much easier to evaluate what you have when you can see it all at once.“As you sort, ask yourself what you actually use, how often you use it, and whether it belongs in that space,” Tipton said.Shara Kay, a Beverly Hills-based certified professional organizer and also a member of NAPO, added that your most-used items should be the easiest to reach and that items should ideally live close to where you use them.As you shop the following collection of storage solution items that Kay and Tipton recommend, they both caution against falling into the trap of buying organizing products first and that the best organizing systems start with decluttering.“Organizing products should support the items you decide to keep, not determine how much you keep. Waiting until the end ensures you purchase the right size and quantity of organizers instead of spending money on products you may not need,” Tipton said.To get your cupboards and cabinets out of the depths of despair and into a space where you can actually find things, take a look at the various bins, racks and other clever items that will actually help. The experts consulted for this story do not necessarily endorse the products ahead unless otherwise noted. The Container StoreA clear bin for just about everythingTipton said that if she had to recommend one item for organizing, it would be a clear-handled bin, specifically these from The Container Store, which are stackable and come in an endless selection of depths and widths. "Unlike a basic storage bin, a handled bin lets you pull an entire category out of the cabinet instead of reaching into the back," Tipton said. "Whether it’s snacks, baking supplies, cleaning products, or toiletries, everything stays together, is easy to access, and is much more likely to be returned to its designated spot."Tipton also made special mention of the smaller bins from The Container Store, which, though intended to fit inside the regular-sized ones mentioned above, she said she often uses them on their own inside cabinets because their compact size fits spaces where larger organizers won’t."[They're] perfect for corralling small items like medicine, cosmetics, first aid supplies, hair accessories, packets, or office supplies," Tipton said. AmazonAnother clear stackable bin optionKay also considers clear, handled bins essential for cabinet and cupboard organizing and suggested this option by iDesign."These work especially well in deep pantry cabinets to keep categories together and keep from losing items in the back," Kay said. Available in packs of one or four, these longer rectangular-shaped bins are made from shatter-proof, BPA-free plastic and have textured bottoms to keep contents upright. The Container StoreCustomizable and stackable organizer bins with wheelsThese clear stackable bins, recommended by Kay, are distinct from the above options because they feature optional wheels that make accessing their contents easier, as they glide effortlessly in and out of your cabinet. Available in several widths and heights, and endlessly stackable, even when mismatched with other sizes, these helpful bins also come with removable dividers for even more organizing potential. "These are great under sinks and in deep bathroom cabinets for cosmetics or backstock items. The wheels help them glide without scratching cabinetry, and they’re easy to wipe out if something leaks," Kay said. Neat MethodAcacia wood drawer organizers in assorted sizes "For [people] who want a more elevated look, I also love the Neat Method acacia drawer organizers," Tipton said of these good-looking boxes that feature non-slip rubber feet and can be arranged in whatever configuration best suits your needs because they come in seven different sizes."Although they’re designed for drawers, they work beautifully inside cabinets to create designated spaces for smaller items while adding warmth and a polished appearance," she said.TargetA rotating lazy Susan organizer According to Tipton, lazy Susan turntables make it easy to access items that would otherwise get lost in the back of a cabinet. They’re ideal for spices, oils, vitamins, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and other everyday essentials. She said that she often recommends the Brightroom line at Target because it offers turntables in a variety of sizes, shapes, and styles for kitchens, bathrooms, offices, and more. This option that we found from Target's Brightroom line measures 15 inches in diameter, has an impressive 4.9 out of 5 stars and features a non-slip surface with a raised edge to keep items in place. "Whether you need a low-profile option for shorter items or a high-sided version to keep bottles secure, there’s a solution for nearly every cabinet," she said. AmazonAnother lazy Susan organizer in different sizesKay also mentioned lazy Susans as a game-changing organizational addition, and linked this acrylic turntable as an example, which comes in smaller diameters and a two-tiered design. "Turntables are especially useful in upper corner cabinets. They work well for oils, vinegars, sauces, medicines, supplements, or toiletries. The key is choosing a size that fits the depth of your cabinet," she said.AmazonA stackable and expandable shelf riserTipton told us that many cabinets have unused vertical space above shorter items."Shelf risers and expandable shelves make use of that wasted space by creating an additional level for dishes, mugs, canned goods, or toiletries," she said. Based on this guidance, we found this popular pair of riser shelves that's stackable and extendable to perfectly fit your existing cabinet space. Made from metal, each shelf can hold up to 30 pounds. AmazonAn adjustable tiered spice rackKay recommended this three-tiered expandable spice rack made from bamboo. She said that racks such as this one "are helpful for spices, canned goods, medicines, and supplements because they allow you to see what you have instead of stacking items directly in front of each other."AmazonA set of dividers for cutting boards, sheet pans and moreTipton called adjustable dividers excellent for storing cutting boards, baking sheets, cooling racks, serving trays, and even folded linens vertically instead of stacking them.We found these shelf dividers that are made from wood and available in packs of four, six or 10. They’re designed to install easily.AmazonAn adjustable organizer rack for pots and pansSeeking inspiration for Tipton's suggestion of a file organizer for cabinets, we found this dedicated rack for pots, pans, plates or lids. It's made from metal and expands up to nearly 23 inches in length. The Container StoreA linen-covered box with a lidWhen it comes to keeping your linen cabinets organized, Kay said that she prefers towels and sheets folded and stacked neatly on a shelf without containers. But for more memento and keepsake items that may need an extra layer of protection, she suggests these linen-covered boxes from The Container Store. "The lid keeps items protected, and the window makes them easy to label," she said. These come in two sizes.
