The average time it takes for a civil court ruling to be issued has more than halved under a new judicial reform, falling from 774 days to 357 over 18 months of implementation, according to data presented by the Justice Ministry on Thursday.
The clearance rate – cases resolved compared with new filings – topped 100% for the first time, reaching 105.1%, as courts completed 618,239 cases against 588,339 new ones, meaning they are now cutting into backlogs rather than only handling new filings.
Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis said during the presentation of the data that Greece aims to match the European Union’s 627-day average for final rulings by 2027, and rank among Europe’s five fastest justice systems by 2030.
He said judges will be equipped with modern technology and new digital tools over the next two years.
