Russian troops use grids to protect the upper profiles of their ships from drones; however, these structures serve no practical purpose due to how explosions propagate underwater.
According to a Ukrinform correspondent, Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Naval Forces, made these remarks during a television broadcast.
“The upper profile is sometimes protected by grids. This… may make sense when it comes to attacks by loitering munitions or small drones,” the spokesperson noted.
According to him, it is impossible to use such protection systems below the waterline because they significantly affect seaworthiness. Furthermore, even an explosion in the water at a certain distance can have a significant impact because shock waves propagate differently in aquatic environments.
“Underwater explosions have slightly different physics than air explosions because water does not expand; therefore, in this sense, it makes no difference. Of course, no protection is observed,” he added.
