The limited-run 788SH, based on McLaren’s veteran supercar, gets more power, less weight and sharper aerodynamics, and is expected to be the brand’s last model powered by gasoline aloneNir Ben Zaken| Related TopicsMcLaren has unveiled the 788SH, an extreme version of its veteran supercar, first shown at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show as the 720S and heavily updated three years ago as the 750S.The new version will be built in a limited run of 200 units, half as coupes and half as Spider convertibles. It is expected to be McLaren’s final car without electric assistance. Power still comes from a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, now producing 788 hp, 38 hp more than the standard version. The increase comes thanks to lighter forged pistons, along with changes to the turbochargers, fuel pump and exhaust system. The latter is made of titanium and uses four rear outlets instead of one, a change that should also improve the soundtrack.GalleryMcLaren has unveiled the 788SH Despite the added power and a 12-kilogram weight reduction, achieved through changes to the carbon bodywork, acceleration from 0 to 100 kph remains unchanged at 2.8 seconds, as does the top speed of 330 kph.The run to 200 kph, however, is 0.2 seconds quicker, at 7 seconds.Externally, the 788SH is distinguished by improved aerodynamics, including massive air deflectors around the body, vents in the front wheel arches to reduce turbulence, air intakes in the nose, an S-duct, a roof intake and a large rear wing.Together, these changes increase downforce by 10% compared with the previous extreme version, the 765 LT.There are also lightweight forged wheels with a central locking mechanism, as used in race cars. They are fitted with stickier Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires than those on the regular 750S.The interiorThe suspension also gets a dedicated setup, with the front lowered by half a centimeter. The braking system comes from the Senna, with ceramic discs and a dedicated cooling system.McLaren introduced a hybrid supercar more than five years ago with the Artura, ahead of its direct rivals, the Ferrari 296 GTB and Lamborghini Temerario. But unlike the Italian brands, McLaren did not continue electrifying its lineup at the same pace. One reason was that the Artura’s launch was accompanied by quite a few teething problems and electronic faults, including one car that caught fire during the media launch event. The 788SH looks like an impressive finale to the pure gasoline chapter in McLaren’s history. The big question is what comes next. Knowing the brand, there is plenty to look forward to.Comments
