Analyst makes a bold claim about Browns QB Deshaun Watson's 2026 outlook(Getty)Questions around Deshaun Watson's health refuse to go away. This time, they surfaced after Cleveland Browns reporter Mary Kay Cabot shared her observations from the team's mandatory minicamp in June. Her observation about Watson's surgically repaired shoulder quickly sparked fresh debate over whether the veteran quarterback can stay healthy through the 2026 NFL season. That discussion took an unexpected turn after local analyst Mike Lucas offered a blunt assessment of Watson's outlook. His comments came as the Cleveland Browns continue to evaluate their crowded quarterback room ahead of training camp. Analyst questions whether Browns QB Deshaun Watson can make it through the seasonThe latest concern started with Cabot's observations from the Cleveland Browns' mandatory minicamp in June. Speaking on the “Orange and Brown Talk” podcast after the sessions, she said Watson's throwing arm appeared to lose some strength as practice went on."I thought maybe he got the slightest bit of fatigue in his surgically repaired shoulder," Cabot said while discussing what she saw during minicamp.Cabot also noted that rookie Shedeur Sanders handled first-team reps on the opening day of mandatory minicamp, while Watson worked with the starters on the second day. She added that the heavy throwing workload may have been the most Watson's shoulder had handled since he underwent surgery in late 2023.Those comments caught the attention of Mike Lucas on the “Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show”. Lucas argued that even a small sign of shoulder fatigue should raise concerns because of Watson's recent injury history."The fact that she's even mentioning it means she saw something," Lucas said on the latest episode of the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show "There's not a chance in hell this guy is going to be healthy enough to survive an entire season."Lucas also pointed to Watson's recent medical history. The quarterback suffered two Achilles tendon injuries over the past two years after previously recovering from a torn ACL earlier in his career with the Houston Texans. Lucas questioned how Watson's body would respond once training camp and regular-season contact begin."If we're even having remote discussions on him showing shoulder fatigue in a situation where he should be the most fresh he is all season, then where are we going to be in September?" Lucas said during the same show. "There's no way that ends well."Cabot later reported that Watson returned to the Browns' facility near the end of June with his private physiotherapist, another sign that he continues to manage his recovery carefully before training camp. Even so, the Browns have not indicated that Watson has suffered a setback. General manager Andrew Berry recently praised Sanders' offseason development, calling the rookie's progress "phenomenal." That has only added to the intrigue in Cleveland's quarterback competition.Training camp later this month should offer a clearer picture of Watson's health. Until then, Lucas' prediction remains an opinion, but it has added another layer to one of the Browns' biggest storylines heading into the 2026 season.
