The Trump administration told a senior official in New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani‘s government to cancel a planned meeting with Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations this week amid rising tensions in the Middle East.Ana Maria Archila, commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs, was scheduled to meet with Iranian Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani on Tuesday at Two United Nations Plaza in Manhattan until the State Department intervened, City Journal reported. Administration officials met with Mamdani’s office to ensure the meeting did not take place.Archila was forced to cancel it and was reprimanded, according to City Journal. Mamdani was reportedly not told of the meeting ahead of his interaction with the State Department, which was also not informed ahead of the scheduled meeting.
“This meeting did not and will not take place,” the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs confirmed. The reported episode came amid tensions between the United States and Iran, which remain at war after President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire was “over” at the NATO summit on Wednesday. The two nations continue trading airstrikes with each other, even as technical talks are ongoing. If it proceeded, Archila’s meeting with Iravani would have taken place after Iranian forces started firing missiles at commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military has been retaliating against Iran’s aggression, destroying over 60 Iranian small boats this week.Iran’s actions were in violation of the memorandum of understanding signed by both sides.Mamdani has been opposed to the war with Iran since late February when the U.S. and Israel began striking the Islamic regime. He has also been critical of Israel during the military campaign.Unlike Mamdani, Archila has not been as openly critical of the foreign conflict, though she has reposted statements condemning the war.Archila, who has no prior experience in diplomacy, was appointed as commissioner by the mayor in February. Before her current role, she served as co-director of the New York Working Families Party from 2023 to 2026 and ran for the state’s lieutenant governor post in 2022.US-IRAN ‘TECHNICAL TALKS’ ONGOING DESPITE TIT-FOR-TAT STRIKESThe planned meeting for Tuesday was not the first time the Trump administration stepped in to prevent Mamdani’s government from meeting with a foreign leader.Last month, the State Department pressured Colombia to cancel outgoing President Gustavo Petro’s engagement with Mamdani. The U.S. imposed visa restrictions on Petro last year after he participated in a pro-Palestinian rally hosted by Mamdani in New York and urged U.S. soldiers to disobey presidential orders.
