Wild scenes and clashes with police have broken out in London after fans flooded a major street following a World Cup match that didn’t even feature England.Footage shows police in riot gear marching down thoroughfare Edgware Rd, in west London, as crowds swarmed the area overnight, local time, following France’s victory over Morocco.Clips posted to X showed people chanting and throwing flares and bottles toward a line of police officers holding batons. One officer was reportedly injured during a clash, according to The Sun, and footage showed one man lying on the road being treated by law enforcement. In another video, multiple police officers wearing helmets and holding shields appeared to tackle a man to the ground on a footpath before surrounding him. Some of the scenes appeared to be more lighthearted, with some Morocco fans seen juggling a football around between them before it was confiscated by a cop. There has also been video of fans surrounding a car with two women inside as they tried to drive through the crowd at speed. “Chill,” the person filming could be heard saying.“Who hit the car?” one of the women said after she exited the vehicle. The man filming encouraged her to get back into the car and drive away, but not before members of the crowd opened up its boot and cheered.Prominent right-wing commentators including Tommy Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, and ex-SAS soldier and TV host Ant Middleton criticised the scenes on X. “It’s time to adhere to and reinstall British culture, traditions and law and order,” Middleton wrote, taking aim at multiculturalism in the UK.Meanwhile in Paris, celebrations were better behaved than expected after more than 8000 police were deployed across the city.Authorities had been concerned at a repeat of the wild scenes in the French capital after club side Paris St Germain won its second Champions League title in a row in May.Photos from Paris showed fans in a jubilant mood having watched the French national team beat Morocco 2-0 to seal a semi-final berth at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.There is a large Moroccan diaspora in France, with the North African nation being a former colony of the French Empire. In the Moroccan capital of Rabat, the vuvuzelas finally fell quiet as the last African team left in the World Cup fell to the might of France and Kylian Mbappe. Before the game, excitement was at fever pitch in the capital. On a packed cafe terrace, a crowd waving Moroccan flags and wearing red and green scarves eagerly awaited kick-off and stood to sing the national anthem, just as the players did in the US.
