As EU eyes age-gating teens, what might a bloc-wide social media ban look like?

Getting a social media ban for children into law across the EU is easier said than done.

As first reported by Euractiv, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen might announce an EU-wide effective ban for minors during her flagship State of the Union speech in September, signalling Brussels’ clearest political commitment yet to taking action as capitals push for bloc-wide restrictions.

At the same time, big questions remain about what such a policy for children would actually look like in practice.

Commission officials have cautioned that the legal framework has yet to be decided, with proposals likely to follow a much-anticipated report next week from von der Leyen’s child safety panel. The panel’s recommendations are expected to shape the EU’s approach to age-gating social media.
