Jamie Sabau / Getty ImagesJuly 9, 2026 Updated 6:58 pm EDTThe last time Bryce Harper competed in a Home Run Derby, he launched 45 homers into the D.C. night. He was a member of the hometown Washington Nationals at the time and beat out his future teammate, Kyle Schwarber, to win the event at Nationals Park in 2018.Eight years later, Harper is returning to the Derby field. This time, he will compete as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, who are hosting next week’s All-Star festivities at Citizens Bank Park.Harper, who made the All-Star Game as a “legend” pick, announced his intention Thursday to join the Derby field with a social media post captioned: “Derby at home? Sure why not?”Harper is the sixth competitor to join the annual slugfest, joining Jordan Walker (St. Louis Cardinals), Ben Rice (New York Yankees), Willson Contreras (Boston Red Sox), Junior Caminero (Tampa Bay Rays) and Jac Caglianone (Kansas City Royals). Of that group, Harper and Caminero are the only players with experience, with Harper being the only previous winner. Two spots remain in the eight-player field.
Only four players have won at their hometown ballpark, and Harper will look to be the only person to do it twice and for two different teams at that. Only four players overall have won more than one Home Run Derby: Prince Fielder, Yoenis Céspedes, Pete Alonso and Ken Griffey Jr.The Home Run Derby is scheduled for Monday night. This story will be updated.Jul 9, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
