France star Kylian Mbappe suffered what he called a “minor ankle injury” during his nation’s World Cup quarter-final game against Morocco on Thursday afternoon, but later insisted he was “completely fine.”The 27-year-old had already scored a sumptuous goal to open the scoring for France in the second half, which was then followed up by his team-mate Ousmane Dembele to give the French team a commanding 2-0 lead. Mbappe did, however, have a rare blip in the first half when his penalty, which he won when brought down by Morocco’s Manchester United defender Noussair Mazraoui, was saved by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.Mbappe’s goal tied him with Lionel Messi’s eight goals in the race for the World Cup Golden Boot.However, Mbappe then exited the match in the 77th minute when, during open play and with Morocco in possession, he raised his arm to the bench and lay down on the floor. The Real Madrid forward did not appear in extreme distress but stretched out his right leg, accompanied by a medical professional. He waved to the crowd while walking off and gave high-fives to his team-mates on the bench.Television footage subsequently showed Mbappe sitting on the France bench with ice resting on his right foot as the game continued.France won the tie 2-0 and after the full-time whistle, Mbappe walked back onto the Gillette Stadium pitch smiling and hugging his team-mates. He was later jumping up and down, celebrating with the rest of his team in front of their fans, which is surely a welcome sight for France fans.“I have a minor ankle injury, but I’m completely fine,” Mbappe said after the match, via FIFA. “(Jean-Philippe) Mateta was in a better position to play the remaining minutes of the match and was fitter at that moment.
