Shares of technology companies rallied as strong demand for SK Hynix shares caused a relief rally in semiconductor stocks.

SK Hynix's sale of shares for the South Korean memory-chip maker's U.S. stock-market listing was reportedly oversubscribed sevenfold. A rout in chip stocks earlier this week was triggered by a selloff in another South Korean firm, Samsung Electronics, after its earnings failed to live up to sky-high expectations.

The federal government is demanding that autonomous-vehicle companies address their driverless cars' pattern of impeding or ignoring first responders and emergency vehicles.
