Political party GERB has submitted a bill that would prohibit children in Bulgaria, under the age of 16, from using social networks, party MP Kostadin Angelov announced.
According to Angelov, the proposal is aimed at protecting minors from the risks associated with online platforms, which he said have become a serious threat to children’s mental health and development.
“We all know that social networks are dangerous. They turn society into a herd without empathy. The Internet is not a playground,” Angelov said.
He compared the challenges facing parents today with those of previous generations, saying that concerns have shifted from children’s safety on the streets to their experiences online.
“Years ago we were worried about what would happen to our children on the street, and today we are afraid of what will happen to them on social networks. Today, a message in a chat can hurt a child more than they can be hurt at school,” he added.
