ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — As the New York Yankees try to jump-start their anemic offense, they will have to figure out how to win without the two pillars in the middle of their lineup. Neither appears to be nearing a return.Aaron Judge will have his ribs re-examined during the All-Star break next week, but general manager Brian Cashman said the club is not anticipating the imaging to come back fully clean. The Yankees are hopeful the images show that Judge, who was diagnosed last month with a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side, is healing. If so, Judge can start to add upper-body workouts to his rehab; he is currently limited in what he can do in the weight room, Cashman said.“I don’t think we want to put him at risk of coming back while still injured,” Cashman said Thursday at Tropicana Field. “He should be asymptomatic before we turn him loose. If he’s asymptomatic and not feeling anything and they’re showing healing, it’s probably appropriate to get him going again. But we don’t want to — because the schedule is what it is — put him in the position where we’re putting him in jeopardy, where somehow it gets worse. Because the downside of that would be a real problem, in my opinion, from what I understand.“The time frame that it would take to heal should allow him to be back with us this season.”Can Gerrit Cole become an ace again?Derek VanRiper and Eno SarrisCashman said he did not know whether Judge would be 100 percent when he returns. Those are answers that will come from the Yankees’ medical staff further along in his recovery.
