It is a risky bet to launch a presidential campaign before courts have determined if it is legal – or not

Marine Le Pen is driving towards the Elysée with one foot on the accelerator and the other on the brake.

By declaring that she will run for president whatever happens, the leader of the far-right National Rally (RN) has removed any doubt about her political determination, even unveiling her campaign website and starting her tour in rural France.

Yet, whether she will ultimately be allowed to be a candidate is also a legal matter, as French judges could bring her campaign to an abrupt, crashing stop.

Everything now revolves around two questions: timing and legal uncertainty.
