Palm Beach International Airport became President Donald J. Trump International Airport on Thursday, making it the first U.S. airport to bear the name of a sitting president. The renaming marks one of the Trump administration’s most significant branding victories after several Trump-related naming initiatives in Washington, D.C. faced legal or political setbacks.Although the name change took effect immediately, travelers will see the transition unfold over several months as airport officials update signage, branding, reservation systems, and operational materials.
The effort began in late 2025 when Florida state Rep. Meg Weinberger (R-FL) introduced legislation to rename the airport. The proposal passed along party lines, clearing the Florida House in an 81-30 vote and the Senate in a 25-11 vote, before Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed it into law on March 30.Because “President Donald J. Trump International Airport” is trademarked, Palm Beach County approved a naming rights and licensing agreement with the Trump Organization in May. After receiving Federal Aviation Administration approval later that month, officials scheduled the transition to begin in early July.
Despite the new branding, airport operations will remain largely unchanged. Palm Beach County will continue to own and operate the airport, while airline schedules, routes, and day-to-day services are expected to continue uninterrupted.Officials estimate the rebranding will cost roughly $5.5 million to replace terminal signs, roadway markers, digital displays, and other public-facing materials. The county has said the costs will be covered through airport revenues and anticipated state funding rather than local property taxes. The airport’s physical transformation is expected to continue in phases over the coming months, meaning travelers may encounter a mix of old and new branding during the transition.Eric Trump celebrated the change Thursday after flying aboard Trump Force One to become the first aircraft to land under the airport’s new name.“There was no way I was letting UPS be the first plane to land,” Eric Trump said during an appearance on Fox & Friends. “We had to be the last plane to take off out of PBI and the first plane to land at President Donald J. Trump International Airport.”TRUMP TOUTS AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM AND CONDEMNS COMMUNISM IN JULY 4 SPEECHHe said air traffic controllers welcomed the aircraft shortly after 5 a.m., calling the landing “a special moment.”The airport renaming follows several Trump-branded government initiatives over the past year, some of which have faced legal challenges. The president’s hand-picked board at the Kennedy Center voted to add Trump’s name to the venue in late 2025, but a federal judge later ordered it removed. Other Trump initiatives, including the “Trump Gold Card” visa program, commemorative coins marking the nation’s 250th anniversary, redesigned park passes, and other federal branding efforts, have moved forward under the administration.
