Prof. Stefana Parascho and Prof. Charlotte Malterre-Barthes have been selected to organise the 2027 EPFL Latsis Symposium. The Latsis International Foundation grants CHF 40K to one head of unit at EPFL, or a group of heads of units, per year for the organization of a scientific symposium.EPFL will host In the Same Room: Technology and Critique in the Built Environment, a symposium convened by Prof. Stefana Parascho (CRCL) and Prof. Charlotte Malterre-Barthes (RIOT) that brings architects, engineers, social scientists, historians, and theorists into the same room to confront one of the defining tensions in contemporary architecture: how digital technology — from robotics and digital fabrication to AI and large language models — is reshaping the built environment, and whether the discipline is reckoning with that transformation as seriously as it should. Technology plays an increasingly decisive role in shaping our surroundings, yet its integration remains uneven, controversial, and often insufficiently examined. Tech-oriented research seldom engages with humanities-driven inquiry; designers and scientists meet only within hierarchical, linear workflows that limit genuine exchange. This symposium proposes a different approach: situating scientific and technical advances within their broader socio-cultural context — from the labor conditions of digital fabrication to the environmental footprint of computation, from the politics encoded in algorithmic tools to the corporate shaping of research agendas. Whether working in architecture, engineering, computation, or the history and theory of the built environment, this symposium seeks to offer a rare shared space to debate, and help shape how technology's impact on architecture and society is understood.
