The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) $10 million in funding for Bridges-3, the next generation of the center’s flagship supercomputer.According to PSC, Bridges-3 will be built by HPE and comprise Nvidia B200 GPUs alongside “high‑core‑count AMD CPU nodes” and an all‑flash Lustre file system, interconnected by Nvidia’s InfiniBand networking.No details regarding which generation of AMD CPUs the supercomputer will contain have been provided.In a statement, the center said the new system will expand on the capabilities offered by its predecessor, PSC’s current flagship supercomputer, Bridges-2.Construction of Bridges-3 is expected to begin at PSC’s new data center in early 2027, with the system slated to come online in the summer of the same year.“The system design reflects the practices successfully established through the Bridges family: selecting technologies that support a wide range of scientific disciplines, enabling flexible workflows, and ensuring that users at varying levels of experience can make productive use of the system,” said Bruno Abreu, PSC’s deputy scientific director and principal investigator for Bridges-3. “It maintains all the capabilities of its predecessor while offering state-of-the-art GPUs and CPUs that deliver substantial performance improvements for modeling, simulation, data analytics, and artificial intelligence.” Established in 1986, the PSC is a joint computational research center with Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. The center hosts three supercomputers: Neocortex, Anton 3, and Bridges 2.
