Australian teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout said he will miss the Under-20 World Athletics Championships in August after tearing his left hamstring in training.Gout, 18, opted to miss this summer’s Commonwealth Games in order to compete at the U20 competition, taking place in Eugene, Oregon.He was selected by Australia to compete in the 200 metre and 4x100m relay, and said Thursday he is “very disappointed” but has “no other possibility but to accept the situation”.“Unfortunately I suffered an injury to my left hamstring last night at training in Brisbane,” Gout said in a statement posted on Instagram. “I received this morning the MRI report, unfortunately the news is not good and I will not be able to compete in Eugene at the World U20 championships next month.”The statement added that, according to the British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification (BAMIC), it is a “grade 3C injury” — representing a severe tear.Gout shared the details for the MRI, which stated a “partial thickness tear of the proximal intramuscular tendon of the long head biceps femoris (hamstring)” and a “partial disruption of the tendon which involves less than 10 per cent of the cross-sectional area of the tendon but extends over an 8cm length”.“I understand this is part of athletics,” Gout said. “My focus now will be on my rehab in the coming weeks and months and ensuring I come back in 2027 better and stronger and faster.”In April, Gout clocked 19.67s to set a new 200m Australian national record at the Australian Athletics Championship. His time eclipsed that of Usain Bolt’s at the same age. Gout’s time would have ranked third in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Noah Lyles took bronze with 19.70s.Last month, Gout made his Diamond League debut in Oslo, Norway, and finished sixth in the 200m event. He also raced at the Golden Spike in Ostrava, Czech Republic, finishing third in the 150m with a time of 14.96s, behind Noah Lyles (14.67s) and South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile (14.78s).
