Supermarkets are bracing for World Cup-related orders this month, with many predicting a boom in on-demand sales during the half-time window, when fans have a moment to take a breather from their screens and order in filling snacks.

“Tournament season always transforms how the nation dines, and this year we’re anticipating a major surge in ‘at-home stadium’ hosting,” says Tom Andrews, Waitrose’s on-demand grocery manager. “We predict a 30 per cent spike in online orders during half-time alone as fans rush to replenish their spreads, with sales projected to soar over 100 per cent during matches. We saw a similar 20 per cent half-time surge during the Six Nations.”

In the week leading up to the first game, the retailer also saw an incredible 1,400 per cent hike in searches for “World Cup crisps”.

The UK crisp market has undeniably upped its game in recent years. While some might not be in favour of a £5-bag of crisps, others enjoy poshing up snack time with up-market brands such as Torres, Tyrrell’s and even Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat sharing bags, which impressed me against my better judgement.
