The Gauteng Department of Health has defended its handling of disciplinary cases involving medical negligence and financial misconduct
The Gauteng Department of Health has defended its handling of disciplinary cases involving medical negligence and financial misconduct, insisting it acted "in all matters where sufficient evidence existed to proceed" as it faces growing scrutiny over its record on accountability and consequence management.
The department acknowledged public concern over its disciplinary processes and maintained that all outcomes had been implemented "in accordance with labour legislation, public service prescripts and applicable legal frameworks."
The response comes a day after ActionSA announced it was escalating complaints against the department to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and the Public Protector.
The move follows a written reply by Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, which revealed that no healthcare workers disciplined for medical negligence during the 2024/25 and 2025/26 financial years had been reported to their respective professional regulatory bodies.
