Russia has imposed a temporary ban on diesel fuel exports as authorities attempt to ease growing fuel shortages on the domestic market, while President Vladimir Putin insisted the country's energy sector remains resilient despite mounting pressure.
Speaking at a government meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced that diesel exports have been suspended with immediate effect in an effort to redirect more fuel to Russian consumers. He also said Russia is expected to begin importing fuel during July as part of broader measures to stabilize supplies.
Novak acknowledged that shortages of gasoline and diesel have become a source of concern for the public, with reports of insufficient fuel availability at gas stations prompting government intervention. According to him, the export ban is intended to increase domestic deliveries and help address the imbalance.
Addressing the same meeting, Putin maintained that Russia's energy system remains among the strongest globally despite external pressure. He argued that hostile actions were aimed not only at harming the country's economy but also at creating public anxiety.
"It is quite obvious that the enemy is seeking to damage the economy," Putin said, adding that the ultimate goal was "to create a tense situation in society." He dismissed that possibility, insisting, "You and I know that this task is impossible."
