Backing a social media ban for under-16s, former Lioness Jill Scott urges: “Swap screens for sport.” Advocating sport as a way to make friends and stay fit, the midfielder is keen for kids to stop scrolling. Playing for England from 2006 to 2022, Jill, 39, says: “We need children to have friends and that human contact. “We know iPhones, iPads, technology is a big part of the world today. But we need to keep those human connections up, because we don't want that next generation to feel alone. I think we can all say that's the worst feeling to have. Sport can help with that.” Government action to ban social media platforms from offering services to under-16s will include platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X. The decisive action, backed by 9 in 10 parents, is expected to be brought to Parliament before Christmas, with protections expected to come into force in Spring 2027. Jill, who runs the coffee shop Boxx2Boxx with her fiancee Shelly Unitt, in Northenden, Manchester, says: “It's about everything in balance, really. There's a lot of good things from technology, but I think it should never come at the expense of sport. Get the kids outside, get them doing sport and keep them active and healthy.”
