The race for television’s biggest prize is officially underway. The Television Academy has announced the nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, with HBO Max’s The Pitt and Hacks emerging as the year’s most-nominated drama and comedy, while a wave of ambitious newcomers has reshaped this awards season.Fresh off its Best Drama Series victory last year, The Pitt topped the field with 25 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Lead Actor for Noah Wyle. Close behind was Hacks, which earned a record-breaking 24 nominations for its fifth and final season, as Jean Smart looks to add another Emmy to her already remarkable run as Deborah Vance.Apple TV enjoyed one of its strongest Emmy showings yet, led by freshman series Widow’s Bay with 19 nominations and sci-fi drama Pluribus with 18. The platform’s growing prestige slate continued to gain momentum, cementing Apple as one of television’s dominant new awards players alongside HBO Max and Netflix. Netflix, meanwhile, collected 111 nominations across its lineup, powered by strong performances from Beef, The Diplomat, The Beast in Me, Black Rabbit, and Monster: The Ed Gein Story. The acting races feature a blend of familiar faces and fresh contenders. Noah Wyle leads the drama actor lineup for The Pitt, while Jean Smart headlines comedy. Zendaya added another nomination to her career, Matthew Rhys achieved the rare feat of earning lead acting nominations in two different genres, and Colman Domingo, Jason Bateman, Martin Short, Laurie Metcalf, and Nick Offerman all scored multiple nominations across categories. As always, the nominations also sparked debate over notable omissions. Critics pointed to the absence of Industry for yet another year, while the final season of Stranger Things failed to secure any major-category recognition. Jon Hamm missed out on a Lead Actor nomination despite Your Friends & Neighbors receiving broader recognition, and Saturday Night Live went without cast nominations for the first time in years.Several milestone moments also emerged from this year’s nominations. David Attenborough became the oldest Emmy nominee in history at 100 years old, earning a nomination for Asia. Hacks set a new record with 24 nominations for a comedy series’ final season, while Jean Smart moved within touching distance of television history with another Lead Actress nomination. A win would give her eight acting Emmys, tying the all-time record for the most acting Emmy victories by a performerThe 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 14 at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, airing live on NBC and Peacock, with Mariska Hargitay hosting the ceremony. Before then, the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be held across September 5 and 6.Voting is scheduled to run from August 17 through August 26.Here is a list of major nominees at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards:Outstanding Drama SeriesThe DiplomatThe Gilded AgeA Knight of the Seven KingdomsParadiseThe PittPluribusSlow HorsesYour Friends and NeighborsOutstanding Lead Actor in a Drama SeriesSterling K.
