A hospital in northern Athens had to be evacuated at dawn on Thursday when a fire broke out in a patients’ room on the first floor, the fire department said.

A patient at General Hospital Sismanogleio in Maroussi told state-run broadcaster ERT she heard a nurse shouting “fire” at around 5 a.m. at a room of the 1st Pathology Clinic, prompting an evacuation.

The blaze was brought under control after 28 firefighters with seven fire engines arrived at the scene. No injuries have been reported.

The Attica Arson Crime Investigation Unit was at the hospital to investigate the cause of the fire. The president of the hospital workers’ federation (POEDIN), Michalis Giannakos, told TV station Action24 that a patient started the fire and has since “disappeared”.
