“Watch out for this scary sign of low testosterone levels … you should be waking up in the morning with a boner,” proclaims one TikTok influencer to his 100,000-plus followers. Another equates low testosterone levels with masculinity and stereotypical gender roles, claiming he was “three numbers away from being called a female”. This year, a study by the University of Sydney found that “manosphere” influencers were using fear to promote testosterone products, with 72 per cent of the accounts studied found to have a financial interest in related products.
