Essendon are looking for a coach to replace Brad Scott, who was sacked in May.Buckley had a 54.13 per cent winning record during his nine and a half seasons at the club and took them into the 2018 grand final and the 2012 and 2019 preliminary finals.He is one of three candidates for the Devils coaching job alongside experienced duo Ken Hinkley and John Longmire.Buckley earned praise from Geelong’s dual premiership coach Chris Scott for his willingness to return to a club as an assistant before attempting to leap back into senior coaching.The Bombers are beginning the process of reaching out to the management of potential candidates to determine whether they want to have a coffee with members of Essendon’s coaching selection panel.James Hird is a definite candidate, while interim coach Dean Solomon remains uncertain whether he will pursue the job. James Kelly, Corey Enright and Hayden Skipworth are also among the list of potential applicants the club is set to contact.Carlton are also searching for a coach to replace Michael Voss. Interim coach Josh Fraser has won seven consecutive matches since taking on the job in May.Category B rookie spot for Indigenous players from 2027Peter RyanThe AFL wants to introduce extra category B rookie spots for Indigenous players from 2027 after receiving support for the move from club representatives in a meeting at AFL House on Thursday.Although any shift in category B arrangements, which are currently capped at two per club, would need to be approved as a change in the CBA by the AFL Players’ Association, the league believes all parties are keen to establish mechanisms that support an increase in the number of Indigenous players on AFL lists.Malakai Champion is on the Eagles’ rookie list. AFL PhotosSources at the meeting, which was held to discuss the issues surrounding the development of Indigenous talent, said there were positive discussions about the need to give clubs resources to support additional category B rookie spots.There was also an acceptance, according to sources who preferred to remain anonymous to speak freely, that the pathways underpinning the development of Indigenous players needed to be strong to support the additional list spot.Former players Shaun Burgoyne and Eddie Betts addressed their concern about the plan to this masthead on Saturday. The league is expected to undertake more consultation with relevant parties to ensure there is support for the introduction of an extra spot.Clubs believe there will be players who are involved in club Next Generation academy programs but are not drafted who would benefit from the opportunity to move directly to an AFL program as a category B rookie at another club, rather than continuing their career outside the system.Clubs were told they could have more than one Indigenous player as a category B rookie from 2027 and although it would not be mandatory, the league is confident most clubs will use the opportunity when it becomes available at the end of next season.Bulldogs won’t play English unless fully fit: BeveridgeRoy WardWestern Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge admits Tim English wasn’t “totally ready to play” when he returned for last week’s loss to Sydney, so the star ruckman won’t be risked if he isn’t completely fit this Sunday.The Bulldogs play West Coast at Marvel Stadium on Sunday and Beveridge said on Thursday he would only play English if he is close to full fitness after battling knee, hamstring and concussion issues this season.Lachlan McAndrew of the Crows and Tim English of the Bulldogs contest the ruck in June.Getty ImagesBeveridge also said following the Swans game that English was dealing with a “stiff back” during the bye week and he didn’t specify on Thursday what issue was troubling English this week.Beveridge made the unusual move of sending English to a defensive role against the Swans and moving Rory Lobb into the ruck against the in-form Brodie Grundy.But he doesn’t want to move English to defence again; instead he wants English to “stabilise” the Bulldogs midfield.Beveridge reiterated he did not want players who weren’t at full fitness or close to it and his medical team took a conservative view of most injuries.“In hindsight, he [English] wasn’t totally ready to play last week and that’s costly. But that stood out because of the position, the ruck spot, and what it entails,” Beveridge said on Thursday.“Tim went OK down there, he defended reasonably well, but it is not something you want to replicate.”English will have until the last moment on Sunday to prove his fitness.“We don’t know yet, he will warm up and we will see how he is feeling,” Beveridge said.“We will work through it. He declared himself fit last week, so we picked him, and it probably didn’t turn out the way we thought it would.“Ultimately, we have to be convinced that he is pretty close to 100 per cent to play this week.”Lobb has become even more important to the Bulldogs following Sam Darcy’s season-ending knee injury along with a number of other young talls still learning key position roles.“Rory has been a pretty good key defender but at the moment, without Sammy Darcy and with Crofty [Jordan Croft] emerging as a key forward, to ensure we have some representation forward of the ball, we’ve sometimes needed Lobby for that as well,” Beveridge said.“Striking a balance with that is important. He’s very frustrated.”Asked if Nash would recover from this injury, Mitchell was adamant that it is “when, not if”. “The worst-case scenario is he misses the rest of this season.”Defender Josh Battle is recovering from having his appendix removed last week and also will remain sidelined. “The boys are all saying he has man flu and he should be fine. But unfortunately, he won’t be available either,” Mitchell said.Impey (hamstring), Amon (knee), Max Beattie (ankle), James Blanck (hamstring) and Finn Maginness had fitness tests at Thursday training, ahead of the team being named in the evening.The Hawks fell 96 points behind against the Demons last weekend, before restricting the damage to 35.Mitchell said effort, not missing players, was the issue. He also noted the team showed character by rallying late. “When you give behaviours like that, you get performances like that,” he said. “I think of it as an outlier from an effort point of view. But just being sure that we were doing everything we can on the inside to ensure that medium to long term we will be in good health.”Essendon sit last and appear headed for their first wooden spoon since 2016 ahead of a daunting trip to the Gabba to face the Brisbane Lions, the reigning premiers.The Lions put them to the sword with a 64-point win at Marvel Stadium in round eight, but Solomon is taking heart from Essendon’s last match in Brisbane.Last year, the Bombers pushed the Lions to 18 points at the Gabba when the visitors were decimated by injuries.“We get to go on the road against the best in the comp and compare ourselves,” Solomon said. “Last year we went up there, a very similar situation, undermanned, and did quite well.”From our partners
