Aviation workers’ unions have issued a 14-day ultimatum to airlines operating in Nigeria to remit all outstanding five per cent Ticket Sales Charges collected on behalf of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and other aviation agencies, warning that failure to comply could result in industrial action capable of disrupting flight operations across the country.

The unions, under the umbrella of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the National Union of Air Transport Employees, on Wednesday said the continued withholding of the statutory charges had deprived aviation agencies of billions of naira required to sustain safety oversight and critical operational responsibilities.

In a joint statement signed by the General Secretary of ATSSSAN, Frances Akinjole, and the Deputy General Secretary of NUATE, Odinaka Igbokwe, the unions expressed concern over what they described as the persistent failure of several airlines to remit funds collected from passengers on behalf of government aviation agencies.

Recall that airlines, through their association, the Airlines Operators of Nigeria, recently asked the industry regulator to explore other means of collecting the charge, saying operators could no longer collect the funds on its behalf. Since the warning, The PUNCH learnt that operators have not been remitting the charge to the NCAA.
